Pitch report: “This is the same surface that was used in the previous game. That was a really dry, slow surface with the fast bowlers using plenty of slower balls. It will be the same tonight on this mosaic surface. Lot of spin and slower balls will be on display. Batsmen will have to be patient and wait for the ball,” reckons Kyle Mills.

New Zealand (Playing XI): Colin Munro, Hamish Rutherford, Tim Seifert(w), Ross Taylor, Colin de Grandhomme, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee(c), Seth Rance, Todd Astle, Scott Kuggeleijn

Sri Lanka (Playing XI): Kusal Perera(w), Danushka Gunathilaka, Avishka Fernando, Niroshan Dickwella, Dasun Shanaka, Wanidu Hasaranga, Lahiru Madushanka, Isuru Udana, Akila Dananjaya, Lasith Malinga(c), Lakshan Sandakan

Sri Lanka have won the toss and have opted to bat

18:05 local: It’s a dead rubber technically but a T20 game is always a matter of interest due to the fun element in it. Add to this the fact that both the games in this series so far were last-over finishes, meaning that they were well-contested. The Kiwis were marginally better in the pressure moments and that’s why the scoreline reads 2-0 in their favor. The only thing that’s hurt them (literally) has been the injuries that’s come in large numbers, so much so that they’ve had to add fly Hamish Rutherford over as cover for this game. The Lankans too had a couple of serious injury concerns after the last game, with Jayasuriya and Mendis having a bad collision in the deep in the final over of the game. The duo have been rightfully rested for this game while Tom Bruce has been ruled out for the Kiwis. The visitors will however be boosted by the return of Ross Taylor. Let’s hope we get a thrilling game of cricket, weather permitting as there is a forecast for passing showers.

New Zealand’s tour of Sri Lanka began with a chastening loss at Galle, spurring on a sour start to their World Test Championship campaign. But the visitors recovered well by winning the Colombo Test and now stare at the prospect of a three-nil sweep in the T20I series. It’s been a tour that’s graduated to be New Zealand’s.

The third and final T20I is also set to take place in Pallekele, a venue that’s seen two pretty similar games between the sides so far in this series. The onus is on Sri Lanka to change things up; they have won both tosses and been on the receiving end of two neat run-chases from New Zealand. Playing an extra spinner in Lakshan Sandakan in the second game meant that the game ran closer, so expect more choke by spin from the hosts on what’s going to be another slow Pallekele pitch.

Injuries have formed the build-up for the final match on this tour. Kusal Mendis and Shehan Jayasuriya are unlikely to feature for Sri Lanka after suffering a collision in the last game. And for New Zealand, Martin Guptill (abdomen) and Tom Bruce (knee) have become the latest victims of injury on a tour that’s already seen the visitors lose Lockie Ferguson. Hamish Rutherford has been added to the squad.

When: Sri Lanka vs New Zealand, 3rd T20I, Friday September 6

Where: Pallekele International Cricket Stadium

What to expect: A passing shower is expected in the evening. It’s likely to be another slow deck in Pallekele, with dew playing its part in aiding the run-chase.
